How Rank Up Dota works
A plain-language walkthrough of the Dota picker / counter-pick engine, the matchup and synergy database, and the itemization coach.
1. Draft simulator and Dota picker
Enter your picks, bans, and lanes for both teams (or take a screenshot of the pick screen and read it manually into the tool). As you draft, Rank Up Dota works as a live Dota picker: it scores every remaining hero against the current lineup on both sides and surfaces counter-pick and synergy recommendations — not just a static tier list or counter-pick chart, but a score that reacts to what has actually been picked and banned in this game.
2. Matchup and synergy reasoning
Every recommendation is backed by a plain-language reason, not just a number. Rank Up Dota explains why a hero counters or is countered by another — disables, burst windows, mobility mismatches, split-push pressure, BKB-piercing spells, healing, and physical/magical damage mix — the same threat categories a human coach would talk through with you.
Confidence is explicitly tiered rather than presented as one flat number:
- High confidence — pair pick rate ≥ 2% and an absolute win-rate advantage ≥ 2 points.
- Medium confidence — pair pick rate ≥ 0.75% and an absolute advantage ≥ 1 point.
- Low confidence — mentioned as a weak signal, or ignored unless general Dota logic supports it.
This exists because small-sample matchup data is genuinely misleading if presented with false precision — a pair with 40 total games and a 65% win rate is not the same kind of signal as a pair with 40,000 games and a 55% win rate.
3. Itemization coach
Item builds are generated per-draft, not as a generic "best items for this hero" list. Every suggested item is meant to answer a specific, visible threat from the enemy draft's picks — not a cookie-cutter build. Builds branch into delayed / even / ahead game states, since the right item timing depends heavily on how the game is actually going.
4. Steam login and personal stats
Signing in with Steam (via OpenID, no Steam API key required) pulls your match history through OpenDota and shows trends, records, and hero-pool breakdowns — split by overall, core, and support performance, and bucketed by patch so you can see how you're playing on the current meta rather than an average across old patches.
5. Patch tracking
Rank Up Dota ingests Valve's official patch datafeed automatically, so hero, item, and mechanic changes are reflected without waiting on a manual update. See the patch notes archive for the full history.
Data sourcing
Hero, matchup, and synergy data is derived from OpenDota and dotaconstants public data, cross-checked against current patch notes. Rank Up Dota is a coaching tool, not a boosting or paid-coaching service — the free draft simulator, matchup database, and itemization coach never require a subscription. An optional AI-generated full build guide, personalized to your exact draft, is available on a small Pro subscription — starting at $2/month, with 6-month, yearly, and one-time lifetime options.
